grub clears screen before I can read error

Just before grub starts it looks like there's a warning on the screen, but the screen clears before I can read it. I've looked in /var/messages and don't see it. Is there a way to tell grub not to clear the screen? Is it some other file that clears the screen before grub? How can I read what's output before grub clears the screen?
