open office shows blank window and freezes

Hi,
I'm trying to help a friend of mine with a problem.

when he starts up open office it shows a mainly blank window and then freezes and wont go any further. I'm not sure if it is relevant but he is using proprietary graphics drivers. Everything else working ok

any help appreciated.

i just do a uninstall then reload, you might get lucky...

I tried that, but no joy. I also tried upgrading to version 3 but there is a previous update that did not finish gracefully and now i cant install any more updates in Update Manager.
