problem upgrading from 8.04 to 9.04 in sony vaio notebook

i'm upgrading my sony vaio VNG CR41Z from ubuntu 8.04 to 9.04. Everything has gone well, but when i reboot the machine i obtain a black screen.
The system boots, but it seems there are some problems with graphicals devices, because instead of presenting me the login page, i see a black screen.
Anyone has the same problems? Does anyone know a solution?

From memory the vaio notebooks use ATI Radeon video cards.

If yours is the same, there appears to be a lot of issues relating to drivers for these cards under Linux and Ubuntu.
