There is such a wide collection of programmer on this forum, I just want to ask what type of programming we enjoy most? Some of us are web programmers, some come from embedded systems programming, some are system administrators, and so forth. How do we classify ourselves?

It mainly graphics , music, sound . That is the areas that most interest me. But I am meshing with databases at them moment and would like to try some basic things on AI.

anything other than multimedia is enjoyable to me. so no games. as for embedded devices well i have no experience and hence excluded that as well and i dont know what you mean by teaching and research programming...

Well, up until this point I've done the whole web thing, worked quite a bit with databases, and have written several backend programs in C++ and (not my choice) PHP. So now the next steps that have gotten my curiosity up are GUI-based applications. I've done some embedded work--and believe it or not, it sounds a hundredfold more complicated than it really is. And it's a hundred times as fun as it sounds!

I like "ideas"... and for me this all has little to do with "technology". I actually dislike large APIs and such, although I can do J2EE to get food :)

So, I chose the research/other options. I like algorithms and their implementations, and when it comes to implementations, I've always been drawn to languages that crystallize ideas instead of making me not see the big idea forest for the trees of "implementation detail"... but I guess anyone who has read my posts has already figured this out :p

You were the reason why I added that option, actually. I'm half glad you chose it! :p

And I'm glad to see quite a few people have chosen it too.. :)

What we may find most interesting often has nothing to do with paying the bills (unfortunately) ;)

Mainly graphics.

just now as a student, operating system algorithms, efficiency a lot............
someday i'd like to connect things and surrounding real world to humans, like kinda maybe "human-object" programming, it'll possible as dimensions start merging with technology.................

Games and multimedia (eg. OpenGL, GStreamer, Xine, etc.)

Despite the firmware (too low-level stuff for me) and gaming i'm interested in all of those types mentioned. Haven't picked the most interesting yet.

That is so freaking true!

I specialised in embedded systems (particularly digital signals) and interaction design when I did my CS degree. But there are hardly any jobs in that area, particularly in my country. Now, I'm doing web and sysops stuff for $.
