Adding number of default workspaces?

I tried using the method shown in the actual Ubuntu help/documentation, but that did not do the trick, does anyone know exactly how I can change it so that I automatically have 3 or 4 workspaces when I start up, or how do I create a new one if that is the only way to do it. Documentation says it is possible, but their method did not work for me. Thanks in advance for any advice and your time and attention.

Do you want desktops like on the cube?

Go to Compiz in System/Preferences, general, gereral options, desk size, Horizontal, and change it to the number you want. For a cube use four, if you do not set up rotation etc, then they will be flat.
