if I buy a new HD how do I load ubuntu and all my drivers?

Ubuntu comes with the drivers...It will detect your hardware and hopefully grab the right modules/drivers.

It should, provided you meet the minimum system requirements (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements). If you're going to install ubuntu just select "Guided -- use entire disk" option and it will overwrite whatever is there with linux...no need to format it manually
