Installed Jaunty about a month ago. Worked fine, then today I ran the update manager and in the midst of installing the packages the machine rebooted and I was never able to get the system up. It kept telling me that there was a graphics problem and giving me weird screens with something like "log back on after X11 has been repaired" and other ominous statements. When I re-boot it scrolls through pages and pages of text, checking this and that, and finally I get the same message again.

So I booted to windows XP and downloaded the ISO image of Jaunty and burned it on a CD.

Is it possible to repair my installation of Jaunty (on the hard drive) while running Ubuntu on the CD?

Or what would the experts do? I am wary of trying to re-install Ubuntu on top of my old installation. If I have to do that, is it possible to prevent the new installation from over-writing all my files?
