Notification overload

The new notification system in 9.04 is nice, but unfortunately it doesn't handle applications spamming it very well.

I had someone paste some text to me on IRC and the notifications kept appearing for every line... and they are still coming even now minutes later when I've got the app running full screen and I can see what they have typed without the notification popping up every second.

I'd suggest something like merging the notifications from one app into a single popup, or just discarding notifications if a new one arrives before the old one can be displayed.

seconded. right now it feels really sluggish even when using volume-control, but it gets real ugly if zapping through a playlist. either obsolute notifications should not be displayed at all, or a single application should be allowed to display more then one notification at once.
