View Full Version : [ubuntu] unable to install updates

captainkelly54

Hi, I am relatively new to ubuntu, and I cannot install any updates. Any time i try to install updates, I get this message:

'E: problem parsing dependency Depends, E:Error occurred while processing calamaris (NewVersion1), E: problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_bi nary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

This is very annoying, because I cannot install anything, no flash, no screenlets. Nothing. Also, the computer randomly crashes!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, open a terminal and rm the file

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_bi nary-i386_Packages
then recreate the file.

sudo apt-get update

Hi, after entering those in to the terminal, and it working for a couple minutes. I get this error:

Reading package lists... Error!
E: Problem parsing dependency Suggests
E: Error occurred while processing libplexus-comPonent-api-java (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_bi nary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I'm about to loose hope on ubuntu...

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Just follow PartyBoi2's instructions again, but this time change the first line to:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_bi nary-i386_Packages

and then run apt-get update again. It seems that you are just getting corrupted files. You might also want to switch your mirror to somewhere else in System->Administration->Software Sources. That might be what is causing the problem for you or an unstable internet connection.

captainkelly54
May 6th, 2009, 11:37 PM
Still getting errors, in each error message it says

'Depends' field, syntax error after reference to package 'libglib2.0-0'
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 28803 package 'evolution-indicator':
"'Depends' field, syntax error after reference to package 'libglib2.0-0'"

(i had to type all that out myself)

When you say switch your mirror, specify what I have to do lol.

Thanks,
Kelly

There seems to be a problem with your /var/lib/dpkg/available file. Open a terminal and type or paste

sudo dpkg --clear-avail && sudo apt-get updateThis will clear the available file.

Alright, that installed all the updates, but now I can't open Add/Remove, Synaptic package manager, or the update manager. The window comes up, then immediately closes.

Thanks a lot for your time,
Kelly

Try starting Synaptic from a terminal to see if any other information is provided to what is happening

gksu synaptic

captainkelly54
May 7th, 2009, 03:43 AM
It's doing the same thing, opening then immediately closing. No error messages or anything

What is the output from the terminal for

gksu update-manager

captainkelly54
May 7th, 2009, 08:46 PM
Nothing, just opens quick and closes.

This is what I put in, and as you can see...no results
kelly@Dunn-computer:~$ gksu update-manager

Partyboi2

Can you check to see if update-manager is installed.

apt-cache policy update-manager

captainkelly54
May 8th, 2009, 03:15 AM
the result is:

I have absolutely no idea haha. After I entered
apt-cache policy update-manager
it randomly started working. But whatever happened, it worked. So thanks a lot!!

Hey, back again..i cant install anything again. Now whenever I try to install anything i get this:

Errors were encountered while processing:
sun-java6-fonts
ttf-dejavu-extra
ttf-dejavu
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

What I am trying to do is install Sane, so i can use my hp psc 1200 series printer.

Any ideas what to do?

Partyboi2
May 12th, 2009, 02:28 AM
What is the output to

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg --configure -a

If you are using a HP printer you would probably be better off using HPlip instead of sane.

It seems like you are having more problems with corrupted list files. Open a terminal and

gksu nautilus /var/lib/apt/lists
Delete all the files (Not the Partial Folder) and then back in the terminal

sudo apt-get update this will re create the list files in that directory.

captainkelly54
May 14th, 2009, 12:46 AM
I did that, and it did exactly what you said. But when trying to get updates I get this message:

E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing openoffice.orG-core (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Earlier, my computer wouldn't start ubuntu, but after some fiddling I got it to work after selecting something in one of the menus. I think gradually my computer is dying. I really don't want to use windows

kelly@Dunn-computer:~$ sudo cp/var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status.broke

then, I entered the other two commands and they did what they were supposed to, but the second command came back with no results. Is that right?

Opps...Sorry my mistake I forgot to add a space between
"cp/var/lib/dpkg/status" so it was meant to be
sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status.broke But it does not matter now because you went ahead with the next command. So if

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg --configure -a comes back with no output then you should be all good (hopefully) :)

"One broken package on your system!
Use the "Broken" filter to locate it."

What do I do?

Maybe you have a corupt deb package, so try removing the deb package from the cache.

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/libgl1-mesa-dri_7.4-0ubuntu3.1_i386.deb
then try fixing the broken package with

sudo apt-get -f install

sudo dpkg --configure -a

I have the just same problem. I upgraded (clean install) from 8.10 to 9.04 (i've been using Ubuntu for a few years).

Hopefully having 2 people with the same problem will help. I get similar outputs. For example, look below. I tried to remove some packages after the installation of ubuntu-restricted-extras crashed, but I'm stuck.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Juan

FIXED IT!!!

After spending some time trying everything, i figured out what was happening: one of the packages was wrongly installed.

It was related to the sun-java package, so maybe captainkelly54 could also benefit.

I identified the problem because there were several files installed with 0-byte length in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib, among them resources.jar. I found the package that was wrongly installed in the site:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=resources.jar&mode=exactfilename&suite=jaunty&arch=any

Then I installed each package again manually with:

sudo dpkg --install [package name], for example:

sudo dpkg --install /var/cache/apt/archives/openjdk-6-jre-lib_6b14-1.4.1-0ubuntu7_all.deb

(note: to complete the right package name, press tab)

And that was it!! (just follow dependencies if they are missing)

Hopefully it helps. Regards

Juan
