hi im tying to dual boot on raid0 with windows and kubuntu 8.10, and i cant seem to get grub to ovewrite the windows bootloader, so im lookin at the boot list inside windows, can i just add the kubuntu installation to this list? i have installed kubuntu before windows this time hoping this way might work. i have already tried to install windows before kubuntu then add windows to grub. this way has worked in the past but now the guide is all screwed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto
and it doesnt work for me,can someone help me out plz?

RAID setups can be really tricky, but a good place to start concerning your boot problems would be to download the Boot Info Script to your Ubuntu desktop:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and do:

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh
That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of the RESULTS.txt file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound/hash sign "#" graphic button in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup and hopefully what the solution to your booting problem might be.

You can run that script from any Live CD. :)

i just noticed, when i complete the installation of kubuntu after windows; i am typing in setup (hd4), and it tells me stage 1 and stage 2 are ok, but it tries to run stage 1_5 and they both fail, 16 sectors dont get imbedded and it says it failed but is not fatal. now the twist, i install kubuntu first and everytthing is well, 16 sectors get imbedded and it succeeds, i thought this piece of knowledge might be usefull.

So you didn't say specifically, but are you able to boot Kubuntu now? Or what is the status of your booting problem?

linux newb
May 5th, 2009, 08:03 PM
my current status, both kubuntu and windows are installed on the raid array, only windows will boot, this go around i have installed windows first, kubuntu second, and i get the problem where i enter "setup (hd4)" and it doesnt embed the sectors, and fails to succeed that proccess. therefore i am left with windows boot loader. sorry for the confusion john

I guess I'm not understanding, because if you are trying to follow the Fake Raid tutorial that you linked to:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto

In that tutorial you set your RAID drive as (hd0) using Grub's device command, like the example they give in the tutorial:

device (hd0) /dev/mapper/isw_beeaakeeaa_five
So the setup command should be "setup (hd0)" and not "setup (hd4)". It would help if you could post the output from your terminal (or konsole) of all the steps of that tutorial if you would like help troubleshooting your Kubuntu RAID install.

As long as you have Kubuntu booting OK, there's no need any more to post all the steps you followed in that Fake Raid tutorial. How about instead posting your /boot/grub/menu.lst if you are still having problems booting Windows from Grub. We can work from there if you want.
