esirwinner,

Welcome to the ubuntu forums!

Could you tell us what app's icons you are trying to change, or the version of ubuntu you are running (ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, etc)?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if you can explicitly pick certain icons to use for the buttons, but you can change the icon "theme" by going to:
System > Preferences > Appearance > Customise [button] > Icons [tab]
and choosing something else e.g. GNOME. This will change icons for the whole system.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10, Gnome 2.24

I would like to change for example :

http://www.xlab.lv/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/01_009_ubuntu_upgrade_02.png

Icons inside buttons/beside texts in buttons(Close, Check, Install updates)

i have found only how to remove them but not how to change them.

Just try changing your icon theme in appearance until you find a set you like. You can also go to the icon folders and find the icon is use and replace it if you like. There are all sorts of sites to pickup new icon themes so check around.

Places > Home

Then ctrl + h (display hidden files)

Scroll to /.icons in there you will find all the icons you can change. Either by the method mentioned above with themes or sort through til you find the icon you wish to change. I am fairly new to ubuntu and I use 9.04 but I've managed to change specific icons to my liking this way
