Hello,
I'm a long time windows user, so when I heard of a free OS that doesn't cost me a whole gig to run, I jumped at the opportunity. Lately though, I believe I've been taking windows for granted. When I installed 8.10, it took me a week to get on my wireless network. I finally did, thanks to madberry.org. It took a while, but I finally found a navigation bar that would work (AWN). I couldn't get anything to run on Wine. I gave up on that after finding linux equivalent programs I could use. (GRAMPS instead of Legacy for example for my genealogy research). I havn't used anything like Terminal since using DOS on our old 386. And what's a synaptic package manager? What's wrong with opening an executable, checking that I agree to the terms of service, and clicking on install? In spite of these small inconveniences, I decided to stick it out. I enhanced the visual effects, and found that pretty nifty, I was finally happy. Then I upgraded to 9.04. I had to download the wireless drivers again, which was fine, I went through it before. In attempt to load AWN, I get "Warning: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (-fusion) or another compositing manager" Which I tried to do, and that didn't work. I tried to change the visual effects to extra, got "Desktop effects could not be enabled". (It worked fine on 8.10). When I plug in my headphones, sound still comes out of the speakers. (Same problem I had with 8.10) So, my question is, can somebody help me to fix all these problems? or, should I just downgrade to 8.10? I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E. I hope this is not too much to ask. I don't want to reinstall Vista.

Hello aepollar,

There are quite a lot of problems being reported on upgrading to 9.04.
I took advice offered on the quarums and am waiting about a month before upgrading from 8.10.

Your best course may be to downgrade to 8.10 and wait a while, check the forums and when things seem to be stable , upgrade.

If you are lucky , some more knowlagable user will respond with a solution.

You cannot downgrade without a clean install. If your going to reinstall anyway give 9.04 another try from scratch.

Hello aepollard,

Actually it's better you can run 8.10, as recommended by Bruce. U can't expect Ubuntu or any other distro to work as Windows flavours does, since the intention of having Linux is not replacing Windows anyway IMO. So it's better to identify ur needs first and then find the solutions available in Free world and use it.

Good luck

Kal

Since your Vaio uses an Intel X3100 video card, and there's been some performance regression with intel video cards, you might want to take a look here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1145967).

I have the same problem of aepollard when upgraded to 9.04: "Desktop effects could not be enabled" (even the cube effect stop working) .
Moreover, tracker-indexer became corrupted in both computers after the update.
