Hello,
I'm a long time windows user, so when I heard of a free OS that doesn't cost me a whole gig to run, I jumped at the opportunity. Lately though, I believe I've been taking windows for granted. When I installed 8.10, it took me a week to get on my wireless network. I finally did, thanks to madberry.org. It took a while, but I finally found a navigation bar that would work (AWN). I couldn't get anything to run on Wine. I gave up on that after finding linux equivalent programs I could use. (GRAMPS instead of Legacy for example for my genealogy research). I havn't used anything like Terminal since using DOS on our old 386. And what's a synaptic package manager? What's wrong with opening an executable, checking that I agree to the terms of service, and clicking on install? In spite of these small inconveniences, I decided to stick it out. I enhanced the visual effects, and found that pretty nifty, I was finally happy. Then I upgraded to 9.04. I had to download the wireless drivers again, which was fine, I went through it before. In attempt to load AWN, I get "Warning: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (-fusion) or another compositing manager" Which I tried to do, and that didn't work. I tried to change the visual effects to extra, got "Desktop effects could not be enabled". (It worked fine on 8.10). When I plug in my headphones, sound still comes out of the speakers. (Same problem I had with 8.10) So, my question is, can somebody help me to fix all these problems? or, should I just downgrade to 8.10? I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E. I hope this is not too much to ask. I don't want to reinstall Vista.
