According to NetApplications, Linux usage share on client devices has, for the first time, passed the 1% mark.

Here’s how the web usage share breaks down for April 2009:

* Windows: 87.90%
* Mac: 9.73%
* Linux: 1.02%
* iPhone: 0.55%
* iPod touch: 0.15%

Over a period of 12 months, this is how the market share for the top five OSes has changed:

* Windows: -3.68%
* Mac: +2.35%
* Linux: +0.39%
* iPhone: +0.40%
* iPod touch: +0.12%

Even if you disagree with the numbers, there’s no doubt that Linux is on the up and growing at a rate similar to that of the iPhone.

How significant is this 1%? Very? Not much? Not at all?

I think it's quite significant.

When I started using Ubuntu, Net Applications had Linux at only 0.35%
Thats an almost 300% increase in 3 years.

Most importantly recent developments have caused vendors to be more aware of Linux, and more and more are supplying drivers for Linux now.

I wouldn't think so since it said clients ;)

on the other hand, it's clear those stupid "i'm a mac" TV ads are benefitting apple. It's amazing for Linux because it doesn't have any of that!

I love seeing these sort of statistics. I have said it before (as have many others): there is no reliable way to determine what market share Linux has. Even Microsoft thinks it's higher than 1%.

I think Linux usage is over 1% already, I'd even say that Ubuntu alone already is over 1%.

Novell has made 3 of those:

First (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHwNEyRipkE&NR=1)(just a note, it's from 2007, so there might be more than 30 million users.)
Second (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEYot8voTDM)

Does this statistic refer to English language websites only?
I would be interested to see linux stats (or client on the ineternet stats) for other countries / regions.

Does anyone know of any breakdown by country?
