Is it normal behaviour that the recovery menu comes up on every boot? It is quite annoying as it prevents you from remotely rebooting the server.

I have to select "Resume normal boot" every time the server is restarted.

It sounds like you have recovery mode set as the default boot. You can edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to set which mode and kernel you want to boot. By default menu.lst is set to boot from the first kernel on the list. Look for this section:


## default num
# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.
#
# You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default entry
# is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.
# WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not use 'savedefault' or your

default 0

Change the zero to whichever kernel you want to boot from.

It sounds like you have recovery mode set as the default boot. You can edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to set which mode and kernel you want to boot. By default menu.lst is set to boot from the first kernel on the list. Look for this section:

Change the zero to whichever kernel you want to boot from.
Nope the menu.lst file is bog stock standard, default is 0 and the first kernel listed is not the recovery one.

This is also affecting me.

I've just installed Ubuntu Server 9.04 with no modifications to menu.lst and I'm getting the same problem. Recovery menu at every boot.

OK I found the problem I think.

It's because my kernel command line is (from /proc/cmdline)

root=/dev/mapper/single-rootfs ro quiet splash

and the code that runs the recovery menu is /etc/event.d/rc-default contains a line which says

if grep -q -w -- "-s\|single\|S" /proc/cmdline; then
telinit S

which puts the system into single user mode if "single" is found in the cmdline. If the system is in single user mode then the recovery mode comes up.
