Just wondering, are the backports repos safe? I'm gonna take a guess that the proposed repo is likely to break your system on a regular basis but backports? Yay or nay?

Relatively so. Theoretically, there is definitely a possibility of breakage. Out of personal experience I haven't had any issues from using backports.

Well it's about as safe as universe and multiverse, which officially has no support (only apps under "main" (and rsdtricted) are supported by Ubuntu, everything else isn't) but is generally safe.

I have always used backports and proposed, never had a problem.

Proposed is theoretically likely to cause breakage, but in actuality it has never caused a problem for me.

Do all backport updates find their way into recommended updates eventually?
I need a backport update to fix the wireless LED on my Aspire One but I am willing to wait if there is any risk.
