Anyone remember when Yahoo looked like this?

This is an old HTML file I found cached on a really old computer. This is what Yahoo looked like in 1996.

That was around the time I first started using the Internet. My search engine of choice of Webcrawler. :)

Yahoo has progressed a lot in features, but not by much in appearance.

i remeber that layout fondly, at least back then you could easily find what you were looking for on a webpage.

Thats about the time when Opera charged people for using there browser. I used for the first time Yahoo in 2003. Before that I only used Google and I still do :D

Oh wow, nice find!
I didn't start using the Internet until around 2000 :(
So I've missed out on a lot of things!

i used to use altavista and webcrawler when i first started (they're still going!!!)

started using google years ago, 2000? because it loaded up so fast, all the other big search engines of the day seemed to put loads of pictures etc on their pages.

is this why google is so popular now, because it was so quick to load??
doesn't realy matter now but it did with a dodgy dialup modem

No, but I remember when it looked worse. I didn't know it went from that to the plain browser gray background later.

I remember back in the old days, when Google wasn't around... researching for topics for your project meant you actually had to haul your *** to the library because search engines were pretty much pointless.

Web crawlers and spiders didn't exist, so some search engines needed to have pages manually submitted.

Good times :)

I also remember ancient BBS, and using lynx. Which, by the way, you can still download from the repositories. :)

I remember being in junior high, my uncle was getting the parts and we were going to put my first computer together.

The result:

Pentium 233
128 mb Ram
3DFX Voo-Doo video card
oh and the original hd was I believe 1.2 ghz

I thought I had the coolest thing ever. :lolflag:

Then like 6 months later the Pentium 2 came out.

Makes me wish I still had that computer, just for sentimental value.

Remember their heat controversy? How about that division bug?
Pentium was very hype in 94, it didn't overtake the 486s at the time in terms of interest.

Pentium Pros (1995) are beasts however, they might even be capable of running Xubuntu.

Yahoo always sucked. Back in those days before Google, I always used Excite or Lycos search engines.

Yeah. My first computer after my C64 was a Pentium 75. When I was looking to buy a computer, I wanted to get at least a 66mhz 486, so I was pretty stoked to get my Pentium 75.

When they came out without procs around 200mhz, I always thought they should figure out a way to make one 286mhz to make fun of the old 286's.

LOL @ BBS. :)

I recall having to use pine (text client) for e-mail.

So do I. Except I was so little that I don't remember how the client was set up. Heh, I wonder if PINE is in the repositories...

I also wonder if it supports IMAP.. heh heh.

I call "fake" on this screenshot - Gnome wasn't even around in 1996, much less sporting transparent panels :-P

Nah but seriously, it shows not only how spartan Yahoo looked, but what a terrible search engine it was. You did a search for "offshore" and the first result was a T-shirt company? That's lame.

alpine is a gpl version(pine wasn't released under a very open licence (don't even think modification was allowed at all)).
nano is a gpl version of pico, the default text editor for pine.
