what I did was go into compiz and where it says wallpapers I added four that i wanted and enabled wallpapers, then I typed in gconf-editor in terminal->apps->nautilus->preferences and then turned off show desktop. I hope that helps if not then tell me and I will try to help.:)

Did it for me - thanks. Just want to mention that, after this procedure, you won't be able to have any shortcuts on the desktop. However, your desktop shortcuts are accessible through Places > Desktop
