compiz crashing and brings me to GDM

this started the first boot after I finished installing ubuntu.
when I use the cover flow effect on ubuntu, compiz crashes and it restarts my gnome session. it brings me to the log in screen and this happens every time when I use cover flow.

I tried reseting the compiz effects through the compiz manager but its not doing anything.
this never happened with other ubuntu versions.
I have no propitiatory drivers installed. everything works out of the box.
I have the 32 bit version of ubuntu.

how can I fix the X crashing problem?
