View Full Version : [ubuntu] 9.04 won't boot on 2.6.28-11 generic kernel

Hi,

I've just installed 9.04. I was running 8.04 and upgraded to 8.10 as part of the upgrade to 9.04

When the PC boots up using the default kernel - 2.6.28-11 generic - it doesn't complete booting up and hangs with the last lines before it hangs being

Loading please wait...
[4.128575] input: AI Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/seri0/input/input 4

It will boot using the 26.27-11 generic kernel but throws a lot of lines about "IRQ 155 and unexpected IRQ trap at vector 9b". This may be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/329766
Following a few other threads, I've tried removing all nvidia drivers etc from synaptic and re-enabling them but still get no joy.

My setup:
Intel Pentium-D 2.8GHz Dualcore #820 Socket 775 CPU
ASUS P5VD2-MX socket mATX motherboard
1024Mb generic RAM
Geforce 7300GS PCI Express video card

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my latest failed experiment to try to fix this. Thinking it's an x and nvidia problem:

1. Disable graphics at startup

sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove

2. Boot on default kernel -> fail

3. Boot on default kernel in safety -> fail with message above

4. Boot on 2.6.27-11 generic kernel -> success

5. Remove nvidia

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia*

6. Re-install nvidia

sudo apt-get install nvidia-180-kernel source
Get the following messages:

Error! Your kernel source for kernel 2.6.27-generic cannot be found at /lib/modules/2.6.27-generic/build or /lib/modules/2.6.27-generic/source
Installing initial module

Error! Could not locate nvidia.ko for module nvidia in the DKMS tree.
You must run a dkms build for kernel 2.6.27-generic (i686) first.
Done

7. Re-enable graphics at startup

sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults

Still no further ahead

Some maybe helpful info.
After booting from the .27 kernel I added dmesg.log, lspci-vvnn.log, uname-a.log and version.log to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/343268
(These are under user Bert)
