No sound in 9.04 on boot or resume (fixed by alsa force-reload)

Sorry to post another "no sound in 9.04" thread, but none of the solutions I've tried have worked.

Since upgrading to 9.04, when I boot my Dell Inspiron 1420, I get no sound from any application. If I close all apps that use sound (Firefox, Amarok, etc) and issue a 'sudo alsa force-reload' command, sound works until the next suspend/shutdown.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
