I have just installed 9.04 (Jaunty) and I would like to know what the best programs are.
Please list the name of the program and the terminal command if it's not in Synaptic.
Thanks,

Thanks,
I like pan for Usenet and devede for rendering video into something I can burn on a DVD. conky's kinda fun as an enhancement to system monitor but I don't use it all the time.

You need to say "best for what"?

I'm not really looking for anything in particular. I would like to get a feel for the Ubuntu OS and everything it has to offer.
The types of programs I use for Windows are:
-Audio/Video players and converters
-Ripping and burning apps
-Bit Torrents
-E-mail
-Old School video game emulators
-Photo Shop

Evolution and Rhythmbox are two that I like

Click on any of the links below to install that package directly from the repos:
-Audio/Video players and converters
Video: VLC (apt:vlc) and it's browser plugin (apt:mozilla-plugin-vlc)
Audio: Banshee (apt:banshee)
Converters: Depends what you want. Handbrake is a good video encoding package. You have to d/load it from their site.
-Ripping and burning apps
Brasero is included in the default install, and will burn CDs and DVDs. Sound juicer (apt:sound-juicer) will rip CDs, and DVD::Rip (apt:dvdrip) will do what it says on the tin.
-Bit Torrents
Transmission is included by default.
-E-mail
Evolution is included by default.
-Old School video game emulators
DOSBox (apt:dosbox) and MAME, same as on Windows.
-Photo Shop
GIMP, which again is already installed.
A good place to browse for software is at Applications > Add/remove. It's all sorted by type, and everything in there is a GUI package (unlike most of the stuff in Synaptic)

1. Banshee - Favorite, I get my podcasts from it and listen to my Flac library (https://edge.launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/ppa)
2. rhythmbox - simple and ready to use
3. Songbird - handy extensions (http://www.getdeb.net/app/Songbird)
VIDEO
1. vlc (universe repo)
2. Movie player
TORRENT
1. Deluge - light weight (https://launchpad.net/~deluge-team/+archive/ppa)
2. Vuze - Heavy Weight ()http://www.getdeb.net/app/Vuze
EMAIL
Gmail - not much of a mail client person
ORGANIZER
1. kOrganizer - full blown organizer (standard repos)
2. Project Management - Handy for accurate resources planning ( standard repos - planner)
COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS
1. OpenFOAM ()http://www.opencfd.co.uk/openfoam/
2. Gmsh - simple meshers (standard repos - gmsh)

-Ripping and burning apps = GnomeBaker
Gnomebaker has been superseded by Brasero on Gnome these days mate. I believe it's still in the repos if you really want to use it though.

strait from my text file I copy paste into terminal after any reload:
sudo apt-get install gnomebaker k3b krename kdirstat dolphin vlc wine mplayer k9copy deluge rar grip gthumb rhythmbox ntfs-config devede virtualbox-ose mozilla-plugin-vlc msttcorefonts KGRUBEditor KDEGames
Hope this helps. After any reload, I just run that in terminal and all my fav's are back and ready for action.
I also use dvdfab5 (in wine) since even k9copy still doesnt work on too many dvd's I try.
Have fun!

First of all. Welcome to Ubuntu, you'll love it once you get a handle on it if this is your first Linux distro. And, if it's your first pick, you're wise.
Music
Banshee
MOC (ncurses program(CLI)) mocp starts it up.
Audacious (compatible with old winamp skins)
EasyTag (For tagging MP3s)
Browser
Firefox
Epiphany-Browser
IRC
irssi
Xchat
Vector/ Photo Manipulation/ Animation/ 3D
Gimp
Inkscape
xaralx
Pencil
Blender
Wings3D
Agave (colour selection with eyedropper)
Instant Messenging
Empathy (Telepathy)
Bitlbee (best used with screen in a terminal, multi-platform)
Torrenting
Transmission
Deluge
Mail
Thunderbird (with GMail or other IMAP service)
Anyway, that's a good start on applications which you'll either grow to like, or hate.
Have a good one.

The new openoffice 3.0 can edit pdf's, and so presumably convert back to .doc or .xls.
