Fair enough, you're entitled to an opinion I guess...

But I don't particularly like the default. What I love about gnome, is you can do anything with it. You can have it looking like XP, or Mac OS X. You can have pink, green, red you can have anything!!!

So gnome ftw!

yes gnome-look is a great place to start

here's my desktop for an example you can do pretty much anything unlike some more constrictive OS's

Or check out the threads for the April or May desktop's to see what everybody else is doing

Gnome is nice, but having options to change is even nicer. Try other DEs.

How about something like this:
Which dock do you use to get that parabolic zoom?

Plus one vote for default gnome being just allright. But like others here, I am all for the "and change it" idea. I thought default gnome was a flashback to the 80's in visual flair. But you throw compiz up, find a good theme from gnome-looks.org and you're good to go. My desktop looks awesome, acts awesome, thus is awesome, and it's still gnome...

All these posts and not a single person tries to address the OPs issue?

To change icon sizes:
- Open the File Browser and choose: Edit -> Preferences
- In the Views tab, "Icon View Defaults" section, set the desired (50% for example) "Default Zoom Level"
To change icon previews:
- Open the File Browser and choose: Edit -> Preferences
- In the "Preview" tab, set desired options.

This is how my desktop looks but the "Keep Aligned" option sucks so bad..
