Desktop help

I am new on Ubuntu and I need some help. After downloading the new software 9.04, I lost everything on my desktop. I cannot see the menu/tool bar to work out anything. I only get a blank screen after putting in my user name and password. Can someone help please.

I know up to 8.10 this should work just never tried it
myself.from the terminal

try to open terminal alt F2 and type in gnome-terminal
when you get a terminal type in

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

But if alt F2 doesn't give you a terminal something else is wrong
