Permission Denied during install

Hi,

I'm trying to Install Ubuntu within Windows. However, once installation completes, I get the following error:

An error occurred:

Permission denied

For more information, please see the log file:
c:\users\owner\appdata\local\temp\wubi-9.04-rev128.log

However, there is no appdata folder within c:\users\owner on my computer. Please help! Thanks!

I had a similar error. The folder name was correct, and there was a long log message (which I saved, in case anyone wants it).

The problem in my case turned out to have nothing to do with permissions at all. The CD was bad. I found out when I tried to switch to a full install. A new CD fixed the issue completely.

Had them same problem, downloading the latest wubi fixed it for me.

It's listed as one of the fixes.

The problem in my case turned out to have nothing to do with permissions at all. The CD was bad. I found out when I tried to switch to a full install. A new CD fixed the issue completely.

My CD drive is suspect.
I have used the same CD to install using wubi on a diff system.

The Appdata folder is "hidden" now -- it was not, if I recall, hidden under XP, and the default behaviour for Windows Explorer is to hide both system files and other hidden files (and folders) from view.

You will need to go into Windows Explorer and change it to show system files and hidden files -- then, you will see this folder.

I got the same error after downloading directly to the hard drive (no CD involved) using Wubi installer.

I changed explorer to show hidden files however I don't know how that changes anything.

Apparently the boot record could not be updated because my PC still boots to Windows XP directly with no other options.

Anyone know what steps to take to correct this?

Tried installing wubi 9.10. It installs half way and then gives an error message saying permission denied. It says to check the log file which I found in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp. I don't understand much of this log file

I have Windows XP Professional with SP2. I un-installed wubi and tried to install it again twice but I still get the same error message. I have 2 hard disks. One is partitioned into 2 and the other HD is partitioned into 4. I tried installing on both hard disks but don't have any success. Plz proved me a solution for this as I keen to use ubuntu.

I am having this problem as well. I'm using the wubi installer to install ubuntu9.10 on my windows 7 machine. After about an hour of installation (3/4ths of the way or so) i get an error message saying the same thing

An error occurred: Permission denied

I really want to put ubuntu on my machine but as of right now, it's been a hassle :(

appdata is hidden in winVista and 7...
it has no write permissions in it.
try vbox or install it from cd

I was having the same issue for a couple of weeks since I upgraded to Windows 7. Originally, I installed 9.10 from a CD after Windows Vista and had a dual boot situation - which was great.

I upgraded to Win7 and lost Grub. I expected this. However, I was getting the access denied error when trying to reload from the same CD that worked fine on my desktop machine.

Here is what I did to fix this issue. I am not saying this is the perfect way to fix but it worked for me and it seems like folks are still having this problem so here it goes...
I downloaded Virtual CloneDrive (google it - its freeware) When I installed Virtual CloneDrive, I associated the .iso files with it and no others. I then ran the .iso file that I originally downloaded to make my disc, directly from my Program Files folder by double-clicking. It should be mounted and launch as a virtual drive and run like the disc but without using the disc. I think the access denied error has something to do with the disc drive but I was unable to fix it.

Just follow your prompts to install as you normally would from the CD. Apparently, it saved all my settings from my previous Ubuntu install so I was psyched. :guitar:

Again, this may not be the best way to fix but I am more of a Windows geek than a Linux geek (but I am working on it ;P) Also, it may not fix your issue at all or make it worse so if that is the case, be sure to post back ASAP! My experience was good.

Method posted by pienyereye works very well. I think I faced the similar problem in the past trying to install from CD+RW and I end up burning ISO on teh CD-R and then installation went fine.

Hi

As stated by Mark Phelps and Gregorybekkers, Application Data is 'Hidden" by default. Hence 'Permission denied'.

To resolve the issue, this is what I did:

Note: Done in Windows XP SP3, dunno if this works in Vista or in Windows 7

1. Open C:\Documents and Settings
2. Show hidden files and folders in Tools > Folder Options > View
3. Under the user (e.g. Administrator) folder find 'Application Data' folder

Example: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator
4. Modify its properties, uncheck 'Hidden' option, then save
5. Under 'User\Local Settings' find 'Application Data' folder

Example: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings
6. Modify its properties, uncheck 'Hidden' option, then save
7. Then finally install Ubuntu 10.04 via Wubi

Basically you'll just have to unhide 'Application Data' folder

TRY with IIS Enable

I Solved by Enable IIS in XP;)

I have XP with sp2. Tried to unhide the folders as mentioned above. Didn't work. Still get the same permission denied message.

What are the contents of said log file? As alluded to above, you might need to change your settings to view hidden folders to find this file - it doesn't cause permission errors if it's hidden, but it makes it harder to find it.

I normally enter %temp% in the explorer address bar and it will take you to it. It will be called something like wubi-10.04-rev.log.

Also, what flavour of Ubuntu are you trying to install. The netbook edition isn't working right now as it's still at 10.04 whereas the wubi.exe is at 10.04.1 and it doesn't work across releases. You need an older wubi.exe to get that.
You also need to run as an administrator and have access to the internet.

It's hard to tell from the log snippet... if you rename the current .log file and run it again, then cut and paste the lot between [ CODE][/CODE] tags. There's a little identifying info (location and windows user name) that you can remove if you wish.

I was having the same issue for a couple of weeks since I upgraded to Windows 7. Originally, I installed 9.10 from a CD after Windows Vista and had a dual boot situation - which was great.

I upgraded to Win7 and lost Grub. I expected this. However, I was getting the access denied error when trying to reload from the same CD that worked fine on my desktop machine.

Here is what I did to fix this issue. I am not saying this is the perfect way to fix but it worked for me and it seems like folks are still having this problem so here it goes...
I downloaded Virtual CloneDrive (google it - its freeware) When I installed Virtual CloneDrive, I associated the .iso files with it and no others. I then ran the .iso file that I originally downloaded to make my disc, directly from my Program Files folder by double-clicking. It should be mounted and launch as a virtual drive and run like the disc but without using the disc. I think the access denied error has something to do with the disc drive but I was unable to fix it.

Just follow your prompts to install as you normally would from the CD. Apparently, it saved all my settings from my previous Ubuntu install so I was psyched. :guitar:

Again, this may not be the best way to fix but I am more of a Windows geek than a Linux geek (but I am working on it ;P) Also, it may not fix your issue at all or make it worse so if that is the case, be sure to post back ASAP! My experience was good.

THANKS! THIS RESOLVED THE PROBLEM AND WORKED WELL FOR WINDOWS XP SP3! I suspect my CD drive has a problem because the disk is OK (I used it succesfully on my laptop previously to install Ubuntu).

By the way, an error occurred several times while running the iso file on the virtual clone cd. I resolved that by clicking "continue" upon the error message (other option was to cancel or retry). Again, thanks for helping, it resolved hours of struggling.

Similarly if you download the iso file and wite the contents into a CD or you can use a daemon to read the contents of the iso file, then you can run wubi and select windows installation. It warns about reduced performance for disk operations but I did not notice this from my previous experience.

Many thanks to Krivosh for the elegant solution at post #24, which worked for me on xp. I'd never have found this by myself.

I actually discovered wubi.exe to be in my Download file, where the WUBI "one-click" procedure had presumably put it - before crashing with all those permissions denied (leading, in my case to AVG then declaring the installer to be Malware!).

Since I'd also previously downloaded the 10.10 .iso file, it was conveniently next door in the Download file to wubi.exe, so a double-click on the latter was all I needed to install Ubuntu (which looks lovely). Hooray! :KS

Before running wubi, make sure the ubuntu iso image is present in the same folder, then everything would work fine.If you dont have iso file, google it and download the latest version.

I am running windows xp sp3 and have been unable to install ubuntu using wubi.exe and continue to get a permission denied error. I have tried the suggestion in post#24 without success. Problem is the bittorrent client that Wubi uses is being blocked. You should have seen a popup to allow pyrun.exe (python runtime) access to the windows firewall. If you allowed it, then it may be an upstream firewall.

You can download the desktop CD ISO yourself through your browser instead from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
Save it in the same older as wubi.exe and then wubi will find and use it.

For what it's worth this is what got me around the permission error that comes up during install. I downloaded the ISO into the same folder as the installer's executable and it went right through install and gave me the reboot prompt. This is on Windows 7.

I got the same permission error. I saw in the log it was pointing to F: which were in use by a SD card reader. I just removed the drive letter via diskmgmt and everything went well...

Got the same problem and would like to try your virtual clonedrive solution but have a few questions first. Please note that if I have put something that does not make sense that may be due to my lack of computer skills or I may have missed something obvious, please point out any problems :).

I have Vista the 64 bit one
I have downloaded and installed virtual conedrive.
I do not have a ubuntu file per say.
I have the wubi file (source ubuntu website (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer)) both on my computer and on cd disk do I need a ubuntu file as well?

The wubi file I have does not come with an image/ios file and I have looked at [/URL][U]http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.10/ (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer)but do not know which files to download and then mount.

Also what do I do when they are mounted? Which file should I run presumably from the virtual cd drive.

If someone could help out that would be great I really want to give ubuntu a go and cannot do a dual operating system as my windows op/ms office backups are at home and I am curently at university. So other than running it from a disk which I have yet to try (heard it is slow and cant imagine how you can save things?) I have no other option.

Trust me I did try playing around with installing wubi for quite some time before posting here but I seem to be going round in circles. Thanks in advance although you will be thanked again if you manage to help me :).
