View Full Version : [ubuntu] No Warning for Insufficient Memory During Install

I started with an old Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB HDD Gateway laptop. It had XP on it, but there were some problems. After trying to install Ubuntu 9.04, 8.04, and even OpenSolaris, I was about to give up. Every one of the installers would get so far and then freeze up to some extent. It seemed like some hardware must be bad, but I couldn't decide what - XP ran well enough.

So after some Ctrl+Alt+F1 and 'dmesg|less' love during the installer (before it froze), I saw it was killing processes because it was out of memory. I ended up installing Xubuntu which worked just fine.

My question is this: why didn't it warn me (other than system requirements) or give me some kind of error? Just curious!

Thanks,
Kyle
