Well here's mine. This is my first attempt at really customizing my desktop, after discovering conky two days ago. My conky is largely inspired by Jecho's setup:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7174389&postcount=1419

Overall it's two screens, 4 desktops, and a two line taskbar since I have a bad habbit of keeping way too many programs running :)

Here's mine. The idea is that everything on my desktop has to be black and white, except there is hints of blue in certain places. Opening windows uses the burn effect, with blue flame. Closing windows uses the beam-up effect coloured blue.

Following this theme, I use the black-white 2 style icons (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/black-white+2+Style?content=72619)
The GTK+ theme is darklooks (http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/gnome-themes-extras) (in gnome-themes-extra)
Fonts are all ttf-droid (http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ttf-droid).

What userstyle/theme did you use to get those awesome firefox tabs?

Make tabs appear as buttons:

@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
.tabbrowser-arrowscrollbox + stack {
display: none !important;
}

@-moz-document url(chrome://browser/content/browser.xul) {
tab {
padding: 0 !important;
margin-top: -1px !important;
margin-bottom: 1px !important;
margin-left: 1px !important;
}

tab:not([selected="true"]) {
-moz-appearance: button !important;
}

tab:not([selected="true"]) > .tab-middle {
/* you can change the background color of active tab here */
}

tab[selected="true"] {
-moz-appearance: button !important;
margin-left: 0 !important;
padding-left: 0px !important;
}

tab[selected="true"] > .tab-middle {
background-color: #efeee9;
}

tab:focus > .tab-middle {
outline: none !important;
}
}

Change tab close button

@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);

It has taken me a while and a lot of searching on Userstyles.org to get things just right. The only thing I wish is that I could make the tabs thinner without squashing the close button. I've tried Slim Tabs, but it didn't work correctly.

I don't know why, but I really like your desktop. I know all the elements amd it takes almost zero effort needed to get it but it still looks - good.

Tint default but set on top. (So only need to change one line)

how did you get your bookmarks in the menu bar?

It has taken me a while and a lot of searching on Userstyles.org to get things just right. The only thing I wish is that I could make the tabs thinner without squashing the close button. I've tried Slim Tabs, but it didn't work correctly.

Thanks!

how did you get your bookmarks in the menu bar?

Right click the bookmarks bar and click "Customize." Then drag the text that says "Bookmark Items" and drag it up to the menubar. Once you've done that, exit the customize window and right-click again to remove the bookmark toolbar.

Wow.
All those desktops are very cool.

All I have on my desktop is a single menu icon and a single folder icon that are very small.

My desktop images are just playing an anime, action, sci fi, horror or kids movie and hitting pause on a scene I like then I select take snapshot and that image ends up being my desktop wallpaper image of the day or sometimes the hour.

For example yesterday we were watching the movie Advent Children that I got on blu ray and I was running the backup copy on the laptop and out to the HDTV when a pal says that Clouds motorcycle is huge and I say yeah nice desktop image and my pals say that movie is just out so forget about getting any wallpapers since the movie is so recent.

So I just went back frame by frame and then just hit take snapshot and viola! wallpaper!

It works even for snapshots of Nova episodes and other shows as long as its a video file its easy to get a snapshot and pow! instant cool desktop.

If Ubuntu wants to stay to it's roots, using brown, it should incorporate your theme. By far the best brown-ish theme around.

Might just be your icon theme. The things that can affect menu icon size are:
- fixed vs. scalable icons (can change in icon theme's index.theme)
- GtkMenu/MenuItem size/padding settings.

I've included pretty much everything needed to reconstruct this here:

Desktop Environment: Xfce4
GTK: Monochromatic-black
Window Manager: Compiz Fusion
Desktop: I forgot. Shouldn't be too hard to find.
Emerald: Galactic (created myself - let me know if you want me to attach it)
Firefox Persona: Cosmic
Gedit Theme: Oblivion (Cobalt would probably still work too)
Panel (xfce4-panel), left to right: Xfce Menu (w/ Command division icon), Places, Action Buttons (Lock Screen), Launcher (w/ Federation pin icon), Task List, Disk Mounter (xfapplet), Screenshooter, Volume Applet (xfapplet), Notification Area, Clock (xfapplet)
Overall icon theme: OSX_Aluminum (see Xfce-Look (http://http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/OSX_Aluminium?content=99140) - it goes better with the theme)
Menu and appfinder icons: http://iconfactory.com/startrek/ (converted to png with ImageMagick)

This is my desktop with Firefox open, designed to be as minimalistic as possible without sacrificing functionality. The taskbar completely auto-hides and floats above apps, it comes up when the mouse is hovered over it. I also got mintmenu which is from Linux Mint. As well as separate desktop wallpapers for each desktop using compiz and an animated skydome.

Yes that is Windows7 RC that you see in the back waiting to be launched in VirtualBox. Which by the way I think Microsoft has finally done something good, right after Bill left the company, coincidence...I think not!

Switched to epiphany as my main browser. The lightness is just enough compared to Firefox for me to use compositing without slowdown. I'd rather use Midori, like on my laptops but I'll get severe hand strain without autoscroll on the desktop.

Actually, this is Mint, BUT Mint is Ubuntu, with an extra package or two. (They call it minitifying.)

Considering that lots of people post Mint screenshots, another crowd uploads from Arch and other distros, and one person posted a Windows 7 screenshot, I don't think that really matters.

Maybe there should be a whole Web site just for uploading desktop screenshots. I'd write it.

That's compiz-deskmenu, m'friend. Bound to ctrl-space via the Compiz settings manager. Then I use gmrun for my execute command dialog. I don't think I have xbindkeys installed at all, actually.

A sort of minimal setup, although I am using Gnome & Compiz (I guess simple is a better word).

- Metacity from earlier in this thread
- Custom GTK
- wallpaper from interfacelift
- meliae-dark icons
- the right-click menu is Popdown (http://www.manatlan.com/page/popdown).
- Gnome-panel with huge system tray, that's not normal for me. I tend to end up on Openbox/Tint2 eventually from time to time.

KDE wallpaper,
Panther window borders,
sexy sexy ClearlookOSX3.5 icons(you'll never go back to anything else if you try them),
and the greyed-out icons on the right of the seperator in the bottom panel are minimized windows as shown by Gnome DockBar - no ugly WindowList, and no need for AWN ;)
Everything from gnome-look.org I think.

Apologies if these have been asked before, but -

perfectska04 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7189057#post7189057), where did you get that wallpaper? It's fantastic!

Giant Speck (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7193257#post7193257), what icon set do you use? (Um, that's what determines the icon beside the Application launcher, isn't it?) I love that rainbow-pinwheel-thingy.

(By the way, not exactly new here, but have only just returned to Ubuntu after a long absence. I missed this stuff!)

You can use the following CSS to imitate the Firefox 3.5 urlbar, I've been using it for the shiki-colors userstyle for a while:

/* Awesomebar improvements */

#urlbar {
-moz-appearance: textfield !important;
}

#urlbar .autocomplete-textbox-container {
background-color: -moz-Field !important;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}

#urlbar > .autocomplete-history-dropmarker {
-moz-appearance: toolbarbutton-dropdown !important;
margin: 0px 3px 0px 5px !important;
}

A little more work on my theme. I decided to test out some small-caps fonts and rearrange some stuff on my desktop. I also tweaked my theme a little bit.

GTK: Macchiato 0.3 (modified)
Emerald: Macchiato
Font: ScalaSans-Caps 9
Dock: Cairo-Dock
Conky: Mira (heavily modified)

Wonderful desktop..
Is this cairo-dock at bottom-right of your screen?

Can you give me any additional info, how to do that, because I try to eliminate as much as I can all desktop icons, so your dock configuration is what I need.

That is awesome. Now if only you can figure out how to remove that ugly border that Firefox puts around the awesome bar when you use it with a dark theme. The only way I can think of is to create a pixmap, but I don't know how to replace the awesomebar with a pixmap using CSS.

Very nice. Thanks for this :)

No problem. You can also use the Shiki-Colors firefox userstyle. It adds the Firefox 3.5 urlbar, adds support for fission extension, and fixes other annoyances in dark and hybrid themes (such as dust and newwave dark) that the firefox devs should have added in the first place.

Yeah, those white borders are annoying as hell. I've not been able to fix them at all. There are, however, a few ways around it:
1. Upgrade to firefox 3.5 (I tested it and it seems to be fixed there).
2. Use an older version of clearlooks or murrine (the ones that came with Hardy don't have this issue).
3. Copy the CSS code from an existing firefox theme, such as Dust. You'll have to edit the pixmaps in GIMP, though.
4. Use the pixmaps engine to draw GTK entries, like NewWave.

Well, I'm not quite finished getting conky to load in the right places yet, but since I only reboot once a month I guess it'll do. :D

Has to be said, I'm loving 9.04 now. The graphics is a mess, but the audio more than makes up for it. I've got full integration of the play/pause controls on my keyboard now, which combined with RhythmBox, last.fm and Conky is a match made in heaven as far as I'm concerned.

And pulseaudio *nearly* has working support for my Airport Express, once that's working I'm in geek rock heaven. :)
