official? nah nothing announced so far, just some guidelines. It is gonna be one of my contributions to the art list/wiki. critique?

That would be a really awesome default ubuntu desktop, although there will of course be a bunch of those ignorant people who vote to keep that same old ugly brown theme again.

Except for the fat panels looking out-of-place, all good.

You could probably lose the top panel if you use the menu plug in for the dock. Also allow it to show running applications and activate the systray plug in (if it has one).

better than an obsession of guys wearing headphones?I'd say they're equally missing the point.

Hrm..you notice this while the male herd using anime depictions of ~12 year old school girls for wallpapers and avatars evades you...

I would be more concerned with that crowd.I'd say teenage anime chicks constitute little real concern. Probably just a by-product of the user either a) being of comparable age or, b) lamenting their wasted adolescence.

Gebus, did I waste my adolescence...

Responding to a PM request

Hi, what is the system tray program that you are using in this screenshot?: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7037565&postcount=459

Thanks,

Firstly an updated screenshot, though regulars of this threads will have seen it

It is docker, available in the repos. Works best with fluxbox (which is what I'm using) and openbox, where it'll allow you to control where it is positioned. If it doesn't work try stalonetray or trayer. They must more configurable options I think, at least not relying on the WM for positioning, but I prefer docker where it works :)

Soeaking of system trays... subtle reminder for RiceMonster to respond to my earlier post when he gets on.

Which system tray? Does it...stay in place?

Evilwm can be a bit....evil with that.

It's trayer, and yeah, it stays in place.

I launch it like this: trayer --edge top --align left --transparent true --height 24 --alpha 255 --expand true --widthtype request --SetDockType true

Mine is fairly simple, but took a while to get just how I want it. The system monitor to the right is SysMonitor Plus and is available for download here (http://www.compiz-themes.org/content/show.php?content=100042&forumpage=2&PHPSESSID=84ba9e4cead1d2d6c525068aca4d). To use that particular app, you need to install Screenlets:

sudo apt-get install screenlets

Next, launch Screenlets in "Applications > Accessories > Screenlets" and install SysMonitor Plus with the "Install" option. Once you've finished personalising SysMonitor Plus, restart it before powering down - or your changes may not be saved. To get your local weather showing, go to weather.com and search for your country and town, then copy the 8 digit code from the address bar, right-click on SysMonitor Plus on your desktop, navigate to "Properties > Options > Weather", then replace the zip code there with the weather.com code for where you live.

The transparent terminal on my desktop is Tilda and the cursor theme is ComixCursors:

sudo apt-get install comixcursors tilda

For some reason, Tilda only becomes 90% transparent for me, despite how it looks on my desktop, which could be related to the current Jaunty vs Intel issues. I used colour trickery to make it appear transparent. If you have the same problem as me, report a bug, then play with the terminal background colour in Tilda's preferences until it appears transparent.

If you want system icons to show on your desktop and don't know how to do it, execute the following command:

gksudo gconf-editor

Next, navigate to "apps > nautilus > desktop" and tick the relevant boxes. You can also right-click on each one to make the setting default for all users. Finally, reboot/log out so the icons appear on your desktop.

Peace.

You could try it's successor, Universal Applets (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=8522). It's pre-release and was very buggy on my system, but give it a try. Screenlets is apparently dead.

It's well maintained only because of the community! If it was up to me, the whole project would be done since almost year ago... But with a broad audience reporting issues and giving suggestions, improving becomes only natural. Isn't this the main reason we all release artwork under a free license in the first place? :P

Erectus is an incredible project! I kinda wish they would release a new version soon, as it embodies the Ubuntu spirit better than gnome-human which is distro-agnostic by design. BTW is there a link to that "Wasp" theme? It looks really smooth and soothing.

For some bugs in FF I am using the alternate. The opacity-script by default I would let it. For my part I used this vanilla-script for some metacity-mods ...

Nautilus was modified and compiled for geting it this kind. Here is a link for the workaround: http://www.virtualpixel.de/linux/nautilus-sidebar-modding

About Erectus-Human:

Till now it isn't complete. But I think 1.0 will be quite good. I am nearly sure I will make again some mods for my own gust with it. Gtk-media form the original Gnome-Theme is more what I like. The volumes-icons in Human (22x22) too. Ohh start-here of course ... :D The Ubuntu-Logo is naturally a must for me. ;)

Gnome-Colors:

Perfect work [icons] - perfect build (naming, sym-links, etc.) ... simply the most mature icon-set I know for Gnome. Good to have it. ;)

:) Nautilus should be so customizeable like Dolphin in KDE. Compile isn't dramatic and with open-source a lot of is possible. But dramatic are the dependencies for compile Nautilus ... "apt-get build-dep nautilus". ;)

By the way a little update. The folders on the screen are "launcher" and not simple links or new created folders. ;)

Pretty good. Would it be possible to use a background in the file manager? If you could do that, that would look fantastic.

Unfortunately that feature got axed for Vista. You can still do it with 3rd party software, but I've never used any that didn't decide to mess up my whole desktop after a while, so I'm just sticking with a patched .dll and leaving it at that.

What really bothers me at the moment is having borders on the left and right sides of windows. Haven't seen a single visual style yet that removes them, so I'm wondering if it's possible at all. :/

In 4.3 it has a real "Show Desktop" function when you click it. And the dashboard is now separate from the desktop itself (but you can still have widgets on both)

My VNC setup at work... as minimal as you can get vanilla MWM on a simple X session in CentOS - this particular shot is from the 32 bit session. The only mod I added was the iconbox and recently (not in this shot) a wallpaper.

The CSH shell and nEDIT text editor is basically all I see during a work day :)

wow good to see you here as well mate. by the way i made some twm configs earlier, that doesn't look hideous. if you are interested, i can dust 'em up and send you! ;)

you can probably turn off the bold switch in your Xdefaults, since with pcf fonts like terminus, montecarlo, profont, proggy family, and artwiz, the bold ones would look hideous. kind of distracting when spending a lot of time on vim, coding, for example. or may be you intended that way?

Can you tell me how to install .pcf fonts(esp. artwiz fonts) in jaunty? I tried the usual way of placing the files under /usr/share/fonts, but it does not show up in the font-selection menu in gnome-appearance properties.

In Jaunty you have to remove this file first: '/etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf'

How do I add that little player thingy on the left hand side? Is it for Amarok?

In 4.3 it has a real "Show Desktop" function when you click it. And the dashboard is now separate from the desktop itself (but you can still have widgets on both)

I am running the 4.3 beta and I haven't been able to figure out the whole make the dashboard separate from the desktop thing. Do you think maybe you could help me out?

Okay, here it is...

Theme: Neon
Fonts: All Myriad Pro at 9 except for the window font which is Lucida Grande at 9.5

The first screenshot is a revised version of my desktop (cleaner dock, less cluttered top bar, etc.)

The attached are of the same theme with some slight differences.

Its actually kind of funny, because now, all of my friends want Ubuntu after seeing my desktop.

Yeah

It will take a bit to get there but I'm inching closer to having a desktop that looks as good as it was before I jumped ship. Right now the main things I'm missing are decent alternatives to GNOME-Do and Rhythmbox. Also looking for a way to change icons system-wide without having to shell out for some crappy Stardock app.

Epic.
