View Full Version : [ubuntu] (9.04) Wireless troubles with Lucent Technologies ORiNOCO Silver 802.11b

ZeroError
April 30th, 2009, 11:11 PM
I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an old ACi 2700C Notebook laptop with a SiS Plug and Play BIOS from 1997.

The installation went well and several aspects of my laptop have actually improved; I also enjoy using it a lot more. But I have a problem. The wireless connection rarely connects, and when it does it doesn't last.

When I found out the drivers for my wireless card were already installed (Using lsmod) I immediately tried to connect - and it worked. It then worked again the next time I connected. But afterward the wireless wouldn't connect. Then it would ask me for the WEP key several times over before connecting.

I then upgraded to 9.04 and I can now occasionally "connect" but the Network Manager icon shows 0% connection and nothing can actually use the internet.

I've tried several things:

Using a guide to connect via Terminal (The interface is eth1)
Changing the DHCP routes (Which worked once)
Binding to the router's MAC address (Didn't work)

I currently also have PCMCIAutils 0.15 and compat-wireless installed.
dmesg shows I have the Lucent/Agere 7.28 firmware.

I would appreciate any ideas or links you can give me to help. I really want to continue to use Ubuntu, but without internet access it seems very difficult.

Thank you in advance. If you need anything more, just say.

Here is the dmesg output when it connected but showed 0% strength:

I have absolutely no idea what to do. It actually connected last night, but it was on 34% (I am in the room next to the router). As I type this it is "connected" at 0%.

I have tried using ndiswrapper but I can't find any XP drivers that work for my card and believe me, I've looked.

I will be VERY grateful for any kind of help.

If I open Network Tools and go to eth1 (The interface labelled in lshw) it shows and address under IPv6 (Which I thought I had disabled) and under IPv4 it shows IP: 0.0.0.0 and Netmask: 0.0.0.0 .

Also, quite often when I try to connect Network Manager keeps asking for a WEP key, even though I have already entered the correct key several times.

I completely reinstalled Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid and blacklisted IPv6, to see if that helped (I have a very old router and PCI card). It didn't, still the same problems.

I have also tried wlan-ng (http://www.linux-wlan.org/) but could not compile it due to the kernel not being supported (Too new).

I am considering going back to XP, without internet access it is getting boring.

These settings look perfect. Unfortunately, so far, I can see nothing to fix. May I please see:
iwconfig eth1Thanks.

Zero-

This is from /etc/modprobe.d/hostap-utils.conf:
# WARNING: this has the side-effect that pure Orinoco cards will not get
# claimed by *any* driver. So I think you need to remove the hostap packages. Next, please look in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and remove any orinoco or hermes listings. Then I'd reboot. I think eth1 will be back.

Have you obtained your IP address by DHCP or by setting them statically?

I am confused. Does your system run version 8.10 or 9.04? Are you running the vanilla as-shipped Ubuntu kernel? Or are you running a downloaded and compiled kernel? I think we will have the best success with vanilla 9.04.

I'm running vanilla 8.10. I DID have 9.04 but got rid of it in a last-ditch attempt to fix my wireless.

Where can I download an offline upgrader for 9.04? I'll look, but pointers would be useful.

EDIT: Found it =b

Thank you SO MUCH for your help, chili555, it was much appreciated. But I think I'll move back to XP on my laptop as I mostly used it for the internet (It wasn't much good for anything else =b).

But when I get a better supported laptop/wireless card I will definitely go back to Ubuntu.

You have a few days to convince me to stay on Ubuntu (wireless-wise) while I find the XP disk.

Hello all,

I had old Suse 10.0 with its kernel. Now I reinstalled my PC to Ubuntu 9.04. My problems with WiFi started. Network falls from 100% every couple of minutes.

I use ZCOM XI-626 PCI card and orinoco_pci drivers (the same as I used before).

I get a plenty of following messages:
[ 8703.308816] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.311184] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.314924] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.315247] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.319465] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.322716] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.325816] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.329212] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.334379] eth1: Information frame lost.
[ 8703.335316] eth1: Information frame lost.

Then the card gets frozen, I need to rmmod and modprobe again. I had to write a script for it - the problem really comes every several minutes.

I am sure it has something with 2.6.28 kernel. I found the message that some problems can be fixed in 2.6.29-pre1.
http://intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1873

However I don't know if it is related to my problems.

Do you think that hostap driver would help me ? Or something else would help me ?

Thank you in advance. I use Linux as my only OS at home. And I am dependant on good connection.

Hi
It seems this is a known problem in 9.04, another thread helped me out I had the same problem with 9.04 and a broadcom card just not allowing me on the net even though it had connected to the router. if I switched off security on my wireless router it works fine.

I hope this helps

Hello, is there any other solution ? Honestly, I don't want to switch the security off...

Does anybody work on this problem ? I would help as much as I am able to.

Has anyone tried using a WEP encryption instead of WPA?

I have the same problem: I receive a lot of information frame lost and at some point the connection breaks!

I use a Xi-325 card from zcomax and the orinoco_cs driver

I have changed an option in my gateway. I have change the transmission rate from auto to 2 Mbps. Before I did that I was unable to transfer 700MB. So far I have transmitted 652MB without losing connection. Maybe you should try changing that option! please write back to verrify if it works.

I do not know yet if a higher transmission rate will work.
