View Full Version : [ubuntu] Make New Ubuntu 9.04 install look like ELive (Using E17)

I've been poking around with a few distros here and there, Ubuntu is the one I've used the most and I find it the easiest to setup and configure. (Perhaps this is simply because I am more used to it than the others)

Anyway, I've seen ELive (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Elive-Compiz-104523.shtml), and it's positively gorgeous. I'd like the looks of ELive combined with the solid foundation that Ubuntu provides. Is there a decent way to do this?

Thanks in advance,

-Sootah

There are two Linux distributions which are almost 100% based off of Ubuntu that use the E17 desktop environment and are free. Their moonOS and OpenGEU, however their both based on Ubuntu 8.10. Their both working on a 9.04 version but I don't know when they'll be released. You can install the E16 desktop environment from the Ubuntu repository but that isn't near as flashy as E17 but worth a try.

ah yes, contrary to what it reads there, pinning is not necessary. basically, just add "deb http://debian.alphagemini.org/ unstable main" to your sources list.

I installed cairo-dock on Gnome 9.04 and then replaced/added a few of the stock icons to some more pleasing ones, then configured it to look and act like the dock on elive.

I then moved the bottom bar to the right hand side, enabled auto-hide and transparent, when I'm not moused over it, it disappears completely. The top bar I shrunk down to its smallest size and did the same hide/transparent that I did to the bottom (now side) bar. The top bar never goes completely away but it's close.

With full desktop effects on and the theme/color scheme/wallpaper the way I want. The end result is something that looks very similar to elive, except it doesn't freaking crash every time I try to run something or have that ugly 'elive panel'. I keep my desktop clean, but the only thing I haven't figured out is how to make the contents of the top bar pop up when I left-click the desktop, but having it pop up when I mouse to the top of the screen is a good alternative.

Well it sounds like you, my friend, need to upload a screenshot of that bad-boy. :)
