Who is using what OS?

On the internet I have come across various topics discussing the current distribution of OS for business/personal computers.
Microsoft and Mac would be easy to compile, simply from sales of their OS, but for free OS like Linux, how could any stats be collected?
I also read that Firefox will soon overtake IE for preferred browsers, again Firefox is free so how would anyone hope to compile stats on this?

Right now, Ubuntu has ubuntucounter. Not exactly reliable since not everyone agrees to register for the counter.
