I'm trying to install Ubuntu for the first time. I've burned the CD and successfully booted from it. After I choose a language and hit "Install Ubuntu" on the menu, I see a status bar and the Ubuntu logo on a black background for about a minute. Then it shows the orange Ubuntu background, a cursor appears, and finally the screen goes white (except for some distorion in the upper right hand corner) and though I can move the mouse pointer, nothing else happens (I've let it sit for about an hour).

Is this a known issue? Does anyone have any suggestions?

OK, I restarted and now something different happened... It brings up the Ubuntu desktop, with a black background. I can move the mouse pointer, but it is the round hourglass-replacement shape and nothing responds.
