View Full Version : [all variants] Hardy fresh install is SLOW. HELP!

Hello everybody,

I have a clean install of Hardy that is slow as molasses. This is the story:
About a week ago I made a full backup of my files, just to be on the safe side of things. As I finished the backup I thought it was a good time to upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid. So I did a clean install of Intrepid using the Kubuntu version. I did not like the result: the system was slow and the interface missed a lot of functionality, so I did another clean install of Intrepid w/Gnome. The result was also very sluggish, even after all the patches so I decided to go back to Hardy, and now my system is so slow as to be almost unusable. Before all this the machine had Hardy and was fast and snappy. I tried installing and running linux-386 kernel but it did not help much.

Using top shows that firefox and Xorg take up A LOT of cpu cycles.

My machine specs are:
HP compaq 6710b, Intel Celeron Duo, 1GB RAM, 120 GB hard disk, video intel GM965

any ideas?

Further testing revealed that the AC adapter has a worn out cable, so it looks like it is not supplying full power to the computer. As soon as the cable is unplugged, speed goes back to normal.

Darn it. The AC adapter is pretty expensive. Sigh
