I really love radios and one of the thing i love the most about my Nokia N810 is the radio applet which allows me to easily listen to the bbc world service. funny thing is that i am unable to use my ubuntu PC to listen to internet radio streams. i tried rhythmbox but unfortunately am unable to get bbc streams from it. do you listen to internet radio on ubuntu? if yes what app do you use. (please no iplayer please i dont really like adobe air) i would appreciate if you guys can share tips and perhaps links to cool radio streams i could listen to

I listen to Soma FM (www.soma.fm) - particularly the Groove Salad station through RhythmBox with no problems at all.

Give it a listen! (http://somafm.com/play/groovesalad48)

My Number One Go-To Source is Shoutcast: http://www.shoutcast.com/

My Number Two Go-To Source is Live365: http://www.live365.com/listen/browse.live

I listen to Last.fm. It's especially nice right after a reformat before I've moved all my music over, as it's tailored to your tastes.

No, the speaker at my PC is off until I need it, very rarely.

I have a real radio.

I was listening to stations from Shoutcast via Rhythmbox for ages... And then along comes Jaunty which gives me an error saying I don't have the right codec or some such installed (been driving me nuts actually). I'm sure it's just something I need to install to fix this but dang if I can figure out what it is.

On 8.04 though it was just a matter of right-clicking on the "Tune In" button, clicking on "Copy Link Location" and Pasting that into a new station in Rhythmbox. But that was in Hardy Heron. Jaunty seems to be giving me problems with that routine. I'm pretty sure the streams will play on Jaunty using MPlayer though... Or Totem, I can't remember which. Sorry I can't check just this very second, I'm at work behind a Windows PC.

Internet radio is pretty great. Its really good when I'm in the mood for genres that I don't have on my computer like funk and classical. I use songbird for mine.

I haven't recently, but I used to listen to Last.fm a lot. Usually I listen to music on youtube or listen to/download stuff from Jamendo.

Sometimes when I click on a station nothing happens but if I try again it usually works. I think I've had that same issue with amarok and itunes so maybe its just a general internet radio thing :confused:

Last.fm and Pandora are my favorites. I get so many recommendations that I like. The sound quality is good for me, too. I like how there is a constant stream of music. I don't need to continuously select the next song to play. I stopped listening to FM radio since there is probably one to three songs per hour that I like. All of my friends ditched traditional radio. :)

Found this via the Icecast directory: http://www.16bit.fm/

I could listen to the Cafe channel all day, if it didn't use so much bandwidth.

Pandora.com is a great one to try. It's customized to your tastes and if you don't like the song, skip it. My family and I use it all the time. If only there was a ubuntu plugin for it like Windows Vista...:(

I used to listen to 181.fm using totem or vlc until they changed to an online player (silverlight). I happened upon the stream URLs one day to the rock stream and made a playlist of them. If you would like to listen just open your favorite text editor and paste this in:

[playlist]
numberofentries=5
File1=http://98.124.140.132:8008
Title1=(#1 - 2/1000) 181.fm - Rock 181 (Active Rock)
Length1=-1
File2=http://98.124.140.137:8008
Title2=(#2 - 7/1000) 181.fm - Rock 181 (Active Rock)
Length2=-1
File3=http://216.155.137.149:8008
Title3=(#3 - 13/1000) 181.fm - Rock 181 (Active Rock)

File4=http://216.155.137.150:8008

Title5=(#5 - 32/100) 181.fm - Rock 181 (Active Rock)

Save it with whatever file name you like (I used rock181.pls) and open with your favorite player. :)

I like
deepmix.ru
Proton Radio
Psyphy Machine (http://207.200.96.227:8020/listen.pls)
PlusFM (http://www.plusfm.net/)

In ubuntu 8.10 I was using Screenlet named "Radio". Unfortunately, in jaunty (ubuntu 9.04) it doesn't seem to work somehow (it just doesn't make any sound) - anyone has similar problems?

Yes, I like how there's a skip feature. Unfortunately, there is a limit per hour. With last.fm, I can skip as much as a I want. I like the customized radios, though. :)

You're right WispyGalaxy And though my younger sister has skipped until the limit once or twice it's not likely you'll want to do that. Usually if you pick a artist you like then you wouldn't want to skip but one every 3 or more songs.:( Right?

For me, I skip a song if I heard it before or just don't feel like listening to it. I reached the limit maybe 2 times. The radio stations I listen to have have a wide range of artists, and some of them do not fit the genre exactly. Therefore, I skip or ban the track. I have found a lot of new artists, though. I'm favoriting songs wayyyy more often than skipping them! haha

I agree totally with Therion.
Rhythmbox is giving me error messages I haven't seen before when I'm listening to internet radio. Error message is "unable to open output device". Jaunty messed up Rhythmbox/internet radio. This used to be so easy.

If I listen to any internet radio it's usually Deutsche Welle.

Normally though I tune in on my radio, Ironically, I can get the BBC World Service here at home XD

Amarok 2 is very good for listening to radio though

Ok I just got Live365 internet radios working again.
But not shoutcast radios.
So Rhythmbox supports live365 consistently but shoutcast
is erratic. Anyone has an explanation?

Thank you.
