500 GB Optical Disc!

A disc that can store 500 gigabytes (GB) of data, equivalent to 100 DVDs, has been unveiled by General Electric.

The micro-holographic disc, which is the same size as existing DVD discs, is aimed at the archive industry.

But the company believes it can eventually be used in the consumer market place and home players.

Just imagine burning a coaster! :P

I agree with mamamia88.

I can buy a disc, and need a special writer, and then use the disc once, or I can buy an external HDD, and once USB3.0 is default, then you'll get 5GB/s transfer speed, and I ca have a full re-writable drive, that can reasonably fit in a jacket pocket maybe, and given that current HDD's stretch into the TB's in size, then I know which I'd choose.

Also, those guys are being sued over a 17 year old software patent about holographic discs.

Thats nothing new. I already knew about this techonogy and I don't think a holographic disc will replace blu-ray anytime soon since the Movie business has set down the foundation for blu-ray. It would be quite worthless to take up 10% of the entire disc just for a movie and some special features. The only time when this might really take over when we develop the market for Ultra-HD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Hi-Vision).

yeah, I agree about the obsolete issue, or at least superiority of hdd over optical--unless of course they come out with holographic movies! I mean, Blu-Ray is driven by high-def content, and makes sense for storing that format, but I think this new development is a stretch. What will the media cost? I avoid dvd double layer because of the cost

On December 31, 2006, NHK demonstrated a live relay of their annual Kōhaku Uta Gassen over IP from Tokyo to a 450 inch (11.4 m) screen in Osaka. Utilizing a codec developed by NHK, the video was compressed from 24 Gbit/s to 180–600 Mbit/s and the audio was compressed from 28 Mbit/s to 7–28 Mbit/s.[8] Uncompressed, a 20 minute broadcast would require roughly 28Tb of storage.

There is nothing inherently wrong with data compression, the problem is over compression to the point where there are major, highly obvious artefacts just for the sake of squeezing a couple more channels into a broadcast.

I agree that optical media is virtually obsolete, and is lickly to be superseded by faster download speeds. The only reason why I buy CD,s is because its the only way to get music which hasn't bean compressed within an inch of its life.

I archive my music (lot of it lossless) on dvds...Serves as a backup of sorts...But if I'm gonna deal with optical storage I've often thought how nice it would be to have, say, big 100 GB DVD+RW discs (as long as they burned fast, like 48x or something!)
