This only began to happen after I hooked my monitor up to an old windows ME computer to see if it worked... now I can't get my old 1600 by 1200 resolution back, and I'm stuck at 60 hz refresh rate....

Help! I hope someone knows the problem.

Thanks, Hellstudios.

P.S. - any, ANY ideas are welcome.

Open this file:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and past the information here.

I have faced the same problem, let me see your file here.

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

hope this is fixable. :(

Hey guys,

I was having the same problem. I took the advice of the xorg.conf file and entered "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" in the terminal. When I restarted I had a really goofy resolution on the gdm login screen but my desktop resolution is fine after I log in. Upon opening the display dialog it has now recognized my monitors correctly.

I think the login screen issue has to do with my second monitor (1080i hdtv)

Hope that helps.

Just remove this:
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 1280 1024
EndSubSection

Save it and restart. After that open display prefs and you will find all the resolutions.

Try this if it does not work with you
Do not remove it just edit it to be like this:

SubSection "Display"
Virtual 1600 1200
EndSubSection

-- I also had the problem with the login screen. because of the Virtual (may be).

Neither worked. :( I'm still stuck at the same old odd resolution, the only difference is now is that the login screen is squished sideways now. but ubuntu still isn't detecting my monitor.
