Update problem - can't connect to repositories

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on VirtualBox at work. I can browse the Internet fine but I can't get updates.
The errors that I see are like 'Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/'...

Hi can you open a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and post the output to

sudo apt-get update

Could be a proxy problem.
