Hi All

I am a new user of Ubuntu. I currently use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I would like to upgrade to 8.10 to enable 3G broadband. However, since I am a generation behind, I can't seem to find a place where I can download the .iso for 8.10. Can someone point me in the right direction ?

Secondly, my broadband is on a go-slow. Is it possible to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 from the CD (once I have downloaded the .iso and burnt a CD) ?

Aplogies for posting such a noob question but any help will be mightly appreciated.

Thanking everyone in advance.

A couple of options come to mind:

Checking if the update manager (it's on the System->Administration menu) offers a distribution upgrade to 8.10
See if inserting an 8.10 disk results in an offer to upgrade (don't forget to burn the ISO as a disk image)

I think you'd want the alternate installer CD to do it.

Start from here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download), and follow the links - don't worry that it says 9.04, as, when you get to the repository, youll be presented with the various release versions folders.

There are companies who sell CDS - you'd have to research 'local' sources to find what you want.

I have one more question. What is the difference between the standard installer and the alternate installer ? Or have I got my question totally screwed ?

You can read and see how it look here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate) and here. (http://hr.releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/) In short it is not eye candy but it has more installing options. With alternate CD you can upgrade from disc and that is not case with live CD.If you are running Hardy and want to upgrade and not doing fresh install you can not skip versions. That means that you have to update your Hardy and then upgrade to Intrepid and after that to Jaunty if you want to.

Thanks for the info zvacet. My problem is that even though my Hardy is fully Update Manager will not give me the option of Upgrading to 8.10. That is why I am trying to find out if I can upgrade via a disk. I am in the process of downloading the Alternative CD and hopefully this will help me out. I am a bit worried about the lack of GUI as I am a total novice with Linux (let alone Ubuntu) and I may not be able to perform the upgrade.

I hope you don't mind if I ask for more help.

Thanks a million.
