Sytem Restore

I have been using Ubuntu and various distros of Linux of about 2 years now and like to switch up on occasion to learn more about the different systems. So I installed Ultimate Edition, which is and unapproved Ubuntu variation that basically just has a lot of programs and various things that standard Ubuntu does not have. It will not update to 9.04 because of some of the packages installed. Is it possible to use the live cd of 9.04 to do a system restore or some other way to fully update the system to 9.04 yet keep the packages that I have.
