View Full Version : Where in the world does Asus sell these newer model Linux Eee PCs?

So I went to the Asus Eee PC website, and they have a model comparison page (http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm)

On that page, there are a ton of Linux models, but I can't actually find where they're sold:

Eee PC S101H
Eee PC S101
Eee PC 1002HA
Eee PC 1000HD
Eee PC 1000H

Have you seen these in brick-and-mortar stores in your country? If so, which country?

Have you seen them online? If so, can you provide a link?

Bet you could buy 'em off ebay...

Canada Computers sells eee PC's here in Canada, and I'm sure larger stores like Future Shop and Best Buy would as well.

Many shops stocked them at first, but then started stocking only Windows Netbooks once they came on the market.

Having said that, plenty of shops around here still stock Linux netbooks.

My dad has a 701 from this time last year, plenty past Windows netbooks hitting the market, though they were all a LOT more expensive than the 701 at the time. (e.g. £50 or more more expensive)

Best Buy sells the Linux models?

Negatory, I thought you meant in general. Sorry.

I do know that smaller computer stores (but big enough to have chains) do sell the Linux models on order.

I had a Linux EEE that I purchased from Amazon. Restricting it to brick and mortar really limits you.

The Best Buy here does. It can't hurt to ask.

I tried mailing several distributors and they all say that Asus decided not to sell their Linux models on the Danish market.

I suspect the best option is to ask Asus themselves, it to annoys me endlessly, especially since they will not provide a means to get a refund for the Windows license either (I asked a Linux friendly vendor here and they told me that Asus does not handle refunds for software at all).

Meaning they can say that the Linux versions are out there, then refuse to give a refund since we had the option of buying with Linux, while not having that option on the market for general consumption. It's so cunning it's borderline brilliant.

I think in France you can find them mainly on line or in specific computer stores. If you click the link above the big orange box, you get to either the stores or their online sites.

When I clicked on the link, all I got were the 901 Linux Eee PCs. We have those in the US as well.

I'm trying to see where the newer models that supposedly have Linux on them are being sold.

In the UK PC World stock them. If you can't buy a Linux one off the shelf, just get the Windows one and stick the distro of your choice on it.

I know that I have read that many oem agreements with Microsoft preclude them providing a Linux enabled competitor to Windows. This is why many Linux netbook buyers swallow their pride and buy the subsidised and superior specced XP version. They then promptly wipe out XP and install a Linux distro of thier choice.

But it still counts as a Windows sale, unfortunatley.

As long as Microsoft controls the oem channel, I will never be able to go into local computer shop and demand a Linux based netbook with the same specification as the Windows alternative for the same price.

Maybe this will change with the availibilty of ARM based processor netbooks that are cheaper than the Micro/Intel based equivelents. But I think we are a Microsoft lawsuit away from this scenario.

The point I suspect is more, NOT paying for Windows and signalling to the vendors that some of us want that choice. Even if the choice is Windows or no OS preinstalled.

I personally would love to avoid the Windows Tax when I buy computers, I see preinstalling it as a service to Windows users which they should pay extra for not something I should be forced to pay as well.

Sorry, I did not use the proper search :/

I've searched for all the models you specified, all of them are sold online in France with a windows edition from the major sites (did not look for smaller retailers). Some of them come with the mention "Linux certified" from asus..

Newegg.com has one model with linux, Asus Eee pc 1000 40G. Not on your list but 20G ssd + 20G hard drive. The hard drive can easily be upgraded.

$399.99

Sorry I haven't been clear about this.

I'm asking specifically for the newer models that have Linux preinstalled on them.

I don't mean the older models (701, 901, 1000) with Linux on them.

And I don't mean the newer models (1000HE, 1000HA) with Windows on them.

I mean the newer models with Linux on them. According to the Asus webpage, these newer models with Linux exist... I just can't find them anywhere.

bapoumba assures me they're sold in France. Anywhere else?

I have an Acer One it was £219 with Linpus Lite pre-installed or £210 with XP pre-installed, go figure. I still bought the Linpus version and rapidly discovered that I had just been done to the tune of 9 quid, because I ended installing the distro of my choice on it anyway.

Not much help, but a company in the UK who deal with entirely with Linux sell the older models. I remember talking to them about it and they had a lot of problems getting hold of them, delays etc.

I guess they'd have the same problem with newer models, and if they do then others might. Still they must exist some where.

I bought my Xandros Eeepc at Best Buy in the US last decemberSame here. A 900A. The salesman was a bit discouraging -- "Are you sure you want that one? The Linux one?". I said "Yes, I'd much prefer Linux." Turned out to be a crappy distro, but at least I didn't pay the Microsoft tax.

That is the very vendor who explained the Asus refund policy to me. I was shopping around for the EeePC S101 which I find to be the sexiest netbook on the market.

Asking several large vendors like SHG.dk I have been told that Asus no longer provides the Linux models to the danish market.

I am quite annoyed by this, it also means i suspect that once these ARM based netbooks come out, I will have to order one from outside the country and live with a non-DK keyboard (or put stickers on the keys which is just wrong).

Since the originator of the thread is in the USA, Google can be your best friend.
I bought the first 4g model over a year ago for travel and I love it. It uses the Xandros OS. Nice and transparent but in general, Linux techies do not like the OS.
My stepson uses the 2G model for online books.
Very good wireless.

Thanks, gn2. That's exactly what I was looking for.

So when Asus lists Linux options for its most recent Eee PCs, those options do exist, but maybe in only one or two countries. Okay.

Asus has all but dropped Linux, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find Asus' Linux offerings.
Acer on the other hand seem much more keen.

@Dragonbite, I can think of 50 reasons (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152093) not to get that System 76 netbook.

The biggest advantage I see with System76 is you now it will have drivers available and run Ubuntu out of the box. Other than that, I see your point.

There's no doubt that peace of mind is there when you buy pre-configured.
Also it's impossible for a little guy like System 76 to compete with the big guys on price.
Hopefully they will be able to offer added value with superior customer support for Linux.
For some people that might be worth the extra 50 reasons ;)

Are we missing the fact that it has a damn UBUNTU KEY?? How cool is that? Hopefully $50 cool to somebody. Nice touch.
