I've chosen not to upgrade from Kubuntu 8.04 to Kubuntu 8.10, because I didn't like the way KDE had changed.

Looks like KDE is continuing at the same path, so I gave Ubuntu a try to se how Gnome looks now a day.

I like it :P

Is it possible to upgrade from Kubunto 8.04 to Ubuntu 9.04, or to make an install where I keep all my data and settings?

Thank you in advance for your help.

You can but it would be a rather roundabout way. Going via 8.10 and installing ubuntu-desktop and then getting pure gnome by following the guide here: http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/puregnome

If you have a separate /home partition you can choose not to format it and then redirect it to put /home there. You can create a /home partition via this guide: http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome

I'd just do a clean install of jaunty and have a separate /home or you could back up your preferences for your favourite programs (for example to keep firefox settings back up ~/.mozilla and copy and paste it back once ubuntu is installed. Same with ~/.vlc for VLC etc)

A clean install would probably be easiest. All of the data should remain preserved, but a few favorite programs might need reinstallation. The good news is that KDE programs seem to operate mostly fine under Gnome if you wish to port a few over that you prefer.

Thank you for your answers - boy that was fast :)

I'll follow your advice and try a clean install as you suggest.

Thank you again!
