Hello everybody,

I'm new to Linux and I seek your help getting this problem resolved:
while trying to install Ubuntu 9.04 I'm asked to choose the partitioning method for the installation.
The problem is that Ubuntu installer doesn't recognize Windows Vista presence and I get only one option to use the entire drive for Ubuntu installation (installes says: no operating found on this computer, while I have Windows Vista installed on drive C:!)
I dont want to loose my Vista yet and make a dual booting mode...
I have drive C: with Vista, D: with stuff and in addition I've prepared 20GB of unallocated free space on my HDD for Ubuntu installation.
Maybe something wrong with the MBR? How do i make the installer "see" my currently installed operating system?

Thank you in advance,

Hi,

Try the following:

Startup your computer with Windows Vista CD/DVD;
Choose your language;
Select the option "Repair Computer";
Select the option "Command Prompt";
run: bootrec.exe /FixMbr ;
"exit";
"Restart".

Any feedback would be appreciate.

in addition I've prepared 20GB of unallocated free space on my HDD for Ubuntu installation.

Something went wrong when you prepared the unallocated space. The unallocated space sits inside an extended partition. But the partition table of that extended partition is messed up. How did you create the unallocated space? I suggested to delete the extended partition with whatever tool you used for partitioning. If that does not work, try this from a terminal in the Ubuntu LiveCD

sudo fdisk /dev/sda
d
2
w

That should erase your extended partition.

jncs12,
no success with that..

meierfra.,
after deleting that partition and recreating it again (i'm using Paragon partition manager) the installer successfully identified all OS on my laptop and now i'm enjoying my new Ubuntu!!!!
THANK YOU!
