I found this device and it is an great price for an external HD but I want to know if anyone has used this device on Ubuntu? I would be using the device to backup my systems. It states is supports Windows and Mac OS X which makes me think that it will be detected under Ubuntu (just the built in backup program won't work).

It should work fine if you use the USB connection on it. External Hard Drives should just be seen as removable Media by Ubuntu.

I have to say that the Hitachi is one of the ugliest External Hard Drives I've ever seen.

I'd have to agree that it looks ugly. But if I wanted performance and looks I would go for this external Hard Drive here (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822154206CVF).

I am not paying $140 for a 750GB external HD. Especially since I don't care about looks and speed really isn't a factor either. As long as my computer is fast, my backups can happen overnight.

After talking to my wife I decided not to get the H3640U and instead get the following drive:
