That looks pretty snappy. I've seen Gnome, KDE, XFCE, and also Fluxbox... but not Enlightenment. Thanks for sharing :)

Cool. How did you set it up (compiling/packages etc.) ? Can you point me to a single link/thread with the basic steps mentioned ? That would be more cool. :P

Lol I'm working on an article at learningubuntu.com as we speak. It was pretty late when I made the video so I needed some sleep :P.

I like the video! I was just about to ask what Mohitchawla did.
By the way, I love the disclaimer about the guarantee! It made me laugh!

Haha thank you :). That's just my strange and sad sense of humor I suppose lol. Oh and actually I'm going to make a new video because I'm very excited to say that Enlightenment has gotten very great updates that it now has a taskbar and a system tray and much more so now I can actually recommend it as a full replacement. Of course it's still a bit bare-bones but everything you might need is there :).

That is sad, but I use OpenGEU and they have done well with that Distro and its stability... it is what I use everyday.

Not quite sure about Hurd but e17 is really cool. And I am glad they haven't released any stable version just for the sake of releasing one. I see continuous improvement in that cool piece of software...heck, every software has its bugs & errors...this "unstable release" reason is getting way too over rated IMO. I know usability & stability are big concerns and rightly so, but when it comes to e17, at least I personally am ready to make a few comprises for the f00kin beauty of the damn thing ! To each his own, anyway.

Basically sums up my thoughts haha. Also the strange thing is that e17 is truly as stable as Gnome/Kde/XFCE for me:confused:.

If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong. Heck, sooner or later my earlier e17 build or other alternatives I tried did crash on me unexpectedly but not with any serious consequences...just minor annoyances. So who knows ? Maybe you are just a crash away ? :P Anyway I guess those minor annoyances can be way too much for some (or a lot) of people.

I used E17 for over half a year without big trouble. I installed it now on Jaunty and WOW is it fast! Only the compositing with xcompmgr could be more stable, but that is a problem with xcompmgr, not e17. Does anyone have ideas on this? What parameters do you use? I have
xcompmgr -cCfF -r7 -o.65 -l-10 -t-8 -D7
right now. Or do you use something else for compositing?

A release schedule with no clear goals or benchmarks, which makes it worth just about as much as the paper it is printed on.

If you want a different WM why not try IceWM?

Fast, stable and extremely effective - you can see it in action on Icebuntu! (http://www.icebuntu.com)

I find the Enlightenment YouTube video kinda misleading. In Dec. 2007(whatever version that was), I installed enlightenment on Ubuntu 7.10, on an old system AMD K7 1.0 Ghz, WD 7200 RPM HDD 8MB Cache, 2MB DDR RAM). Let's ignore the look of it, because I found its THEN default look to be downright ugly but, hey, it's easy enough to change something as shallow as the look of the thing.

The speed was nowhere near what is depicted in the video....and I did not turn on any special effects, so you DO get better performance on faster hardware.i.e. you won't feel the same speed on an older system as it is suggested in the video. The web browser(can't remember if it was Firefox) did NOT open that fast either.

I removed it and haven't gone back since.

You installed it in 7.10. That's kind of about...1.5 years from 9.04, from which the video is made. You don't think they could have some advancements on that?

To be fair, E17 dev activity is only slightly faster than Hurd dev activity ;)

DR16 of the Enlightenment window manager, also known as e16, was released in 2000. While rumors of its death still circulate, version 1.0.0 was released on June 3rd, 2009.

If that is an indication of what they've done with e16 over that time, I highly doubt that it would respond much differently to my hardware.

I really wanted to get it going but it was a massive letdown and turned out to be a waste of my time. Anyways, it looks like it works very well for some people so good for them.

I think that E17 is really pretty, but the main problem is the lack of E17 apps. It's rather disappointing when I have really pretty menus and dialog windows in E17, but no apps that actually use them. :(

A bit further along in development.
One thing to remember when being overly critical of some projects is the amount of man power alloted to them. As you probably have guessed e's dev is slow but at least it is on going.

If you are really interested in its progress, try it out again. Or if you wish to still comment on its state 2 years ago, be my guest.

I can tell you that my slowest PC, is an AMD Xp 2100+ 1g RAM with NVidia 4200 64mb, and it is running OpenGEU 8.04 (Ubuntu + E17) just fine... it is quite fast and even runs some Compiz features (not all are enabled yet) which I am certain was not available 2 years ago.

About my only complaint on it is that Flash cripples that Proc, but that is Flash suckin more than e ever has IMO.

When it's ready. OpenGEU has even less resources alloted to that project. The latest is Luna Serena and it is based of Ubuntu 8.10. The next release Quarto Di Luna is expected to be released as soon as some key features are finalized and will be based on 9.04.

Try here for OpenGEU... which I recommend since they use Gnome as a base for the missing components in E17. http://opengeuwiki-en.intilinux.com/index.php?title=Main_Page

You can also try Elive, they use E16 on Debian as their stable release.
