Ok, just upgraded from 8.10 on my laptop to 9.04 and have not gotten the system to boot in ubuntu since. From grub I have tried every instance of ubuntu listed and they all lock before the login screen comes up. In recovery mode I can get to the prompt and run commands and the command part seems fine (although I haven't tried running anything big like firefox in it), but when I try to get it to load with 'gdm' or 'startx' it freezes up just like when starting normally through grub.

Any ideas? suggestions? requests for more info?

I'm not sure what you guys want in terms of physical specs, so here is the newegg page of this laptop - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114631

Ah, forgot to mention, running 64bit and I updated through the synaptic update manager thing.

Update: I've downloaded and burnt a liveCD of 9.04, going to try to fix it through there.

New update: Ok, reinstalled 9.04 over the partition it was in without formatting and now is working nicely, for anyone else with a similar problem.
