I was planning on updating my 8.10 install to 9.04, but I just have one question before I do so. If I update to 9.04 using the update manager, will it reformat my drive to ext4, and if it does, will I lose all my files and settings? If so, what can I do to avoid this.

An upgrade will not reformat your disk nor change the filesystem.
A few system configuration files may be overwritten but none of your personal files.
But a backup of important data never harms.
You can change to ext4 filesystem later without reformating or data loss. A tutorial is somewhere in the tutorial forum.
