I installed Ubuntu on my system yesterday and so far I'm loving it. However, I cannot seem to be able to install iTunes or Dreamweaver. I am using WINE to install both of these programs. Can anyone help me? If further detail is needed just ask and I'll gladly provide it.

Thanks,
Adam

Check the WINEdb to see if they're compatible.

Last time I checked, iTunes will not work under wine. (Blame apple for this one)

There are, however, many music managers for linux (Amarok, Rhythmbox, Songbird, Banshee), and most of them will support iPod syncing with a little tweaking. Songbird, in particular, comes with support for importing all your ratings and music from an existing iTunes library.

Wine cannot run iTunes & these apps. can do pretty much what iTunes can; however, if you really wanted to use iTunes, you could try PlayOnLinux (http://www.playonlinux.com/en/)

Thanks for the help. I've looked into getting other music managers, but I need iTunes for my iPod to be synced. I've tried gtkpod, but that does not allow me to manage apps, movies, pictures, etc. I heard that there is a patch that can be applied to WINE that will allow the iTunes installer to finish. Does anyone know how to patch it?

If you're going to use Wine, you need to go to the CodeWeavers site and check their compatibility database for the apps and versions you intend to use, as below:

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name

And, as you will see, both iTunes and Dreamweaver get very low ratings -- as folks have already tried to tell you.

I know that many people dual-boot for the sole purpose of using iTunes. Just keep a small windows partition on your computer and reboot once a week or so to sync things up.

Once again, this is an Apple problem, not a linux one. You might also try searching for and signing one of the many petitions that ask Apple to port iTunes to linux.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I'm just going to run a virtual machine from ubuntu. Vista is taking up too much space.
