View Full Version : [ubuntu] I don't think I want AMD ISO

When I go to the download page and choose 64 bit version and then Begin Download, it provides me with ubuntu-9.04-desktop-amd64.iso. But my CPU is Intel. See the attached JPG for the details.

Is that the right ISO for my machine? I don't think so but I don't know.

I am, BTW, a newbie. I tried Ubuntu 8 but couldn't make the switch from Windows. Now I want to try again and I was inspired by this article http://www.tuxradar.com/content/ubuntu-904-32-bit-vs-64-bit-benchmarks to try 64 bit. But do you think I should? Maybe I should stick with 32 bit until I know Ubuntu better?

In short, which ISO should I be downloading?

Thanks!

The 64 bit implementation for CPUs was first done by AMD and then followed by Intel. That's why the 64 Bit is called amd64. This is correct for Intel and AMD.

So I guess, you DO want the AMD ISO ;-)

The 64 bit implementation for CPUs was first done by AMD and then followed by Intel.

just to be slightly pedantic (sorry), there were 64bit CPUs before AMDs. but it was AMD who made the first x86 compatible 64bit CPU (x86-64 or amd64). intel made a 64bit CPU called itanium (ia64) which was incompatible with x86.

intels consumer 64bit CPUs (core 2, i7 etc) are based on AMDs 64bit design.
