I just upgraded to 9.04 with no problems, but I really, really liked the 8.10 (my first Ubuntu) wallpaper. How can I get it back? I've searched, but can't seem to find the 1920 x 1200 png I think I need. I have a distro cd for 8.10, so presumably the image is on there somewhere...

Same request for the splash screens...

Download the appropriate deb files, then extract the contents. DO NOT JUST INSTALL THEM. First off, they probably have dependencies that are old and secondly, they would probably overwrite the current files and might break things.

Once you have the files extracted from the debs, you can manually place the ones you want where they belong.

Well that was easy. Many thanks!

Then I went on a quest for why the file was named warty_final_ubuntu and found this lovely post: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2008/01/29/an-ubuntu-retrospective-in-wallpaper/
I downloaded some of those too, just to have.
