Anyone still using 8.04 since it's the LTS? I have not moved to 9.04 due to not wanting to reset all my applications and settings and reinstall from scratch. What are your thoughts and when is the next LTS desktop release set for? Also should one use 32 bit or 64 bit in 9.04? Is there still issues with 64 bit in 9.04 compared to 32 bit?

I'm on 8.04 and am holding off upgrading to 9.04 until I've found other people that have the same laptop as me and have upgraded successfully.....I thought 9.04 was the latest LTS release?

Why do so many people not recommend upgrading?

If I remember right, 9.10 should be the next LTS. Could someone confirm this?

I'm staying with the LTS releases because I need things to "just work" or at least work with as little trouble as possible.

Now if I can just find satellite internet that will work with Ubuntu.

My laptop is still on 8.04. When I tell people, they think I'm some noob who used it because it's LTS while Intrepid was around. :P

I just haven't upgraded because it's primarily a torrent box and there's too much valuable data I don't have time to backup. I wish I made /home a separate partition. Ah, well.

I was very happy with 8.04 and since it is LTS I wasn't going to upgrade. But I decided to do it yesterday, because it is my first upgrade since I started using Ubuntu and I did a lot of experiments with the 8.04 installation. So, now that I'm a little bit more experienced, I wanted to have a fresh and clean installation.

Well, I couldn't be happier with 9.04. My TV card is working incredibly better now, without some terrible interference I had with 8.04. My remote is not working yet, but I'm sure it will soon.

10.04 will be the next LTS release.

I installed Jaunty just this morning, although I was originally going to hold off until Karmic. Still have Hardy installed in case something goes wrong.

I have 8.04 on the main box simply because 8.10 dropped the ball on some NVidia stuff and I could not use my monitor in portrait with it.

Have had to go to stand alone install of Pulse in order to get sound properly, but that was not that much of a chore.

Also went with the Ubuntuzilla install vs the repository install for Mozilla items.

10.04 will be the next LTS release.

Well..... currently, that's the plan. SABDFL has suggested it be 10.10, so that it's coordinated with Debian's next release.

I used intrepid for a while, than tried jaunty, and then there was a critical bug that caused a freeze with intel 950 chipsets and my card got blacklisted. Also, skype just didn't work very well, and so I moved back to hardy and I think I will stay, it just works.

I think a lot of people get frustrated with Linux and new releases because things start to break, but thats the price you pay for new features.

if you really want a stable system its probably better to stick with an established release like hardy.

Desktop is still using 8.04. I'll be upgrading all my computers in the next few weeks, but I wanted to see how others are doing first before I take the plunge.

I'm testing out the live 9.04 CD right now, everything seems much snappier than my installed 8.04 version.

I've just posted my take on it here:

I'm still using Hardy because... well... it's hardy. Less chance of breakage and fewer updates.

Why do so many people not recommend upgrading?

Because it breaks packages, easier to me to just backup the home folder and do a clean install. I've used 8.04 and 8.10, I upgrade with every release even though I told my self I was going to stick with hardy.

For those asking... I loaded Ubuntu 9.04 on my Acer Aspire One (160GB HD, webcam, G3, 1.5GB RAM) and it is running great. The guy in the previous post was right, upgrading messed it up a bit. I did a fresh install, loaded "madwifi" for the wifi driver and everything else worked great!

As for Ubuntu 9.04 Server x64, NO PROBLEMS!!! I have a AMD Quad-core x64, 8GB RAM, 6TB, 2TB controlled by a JDMicron PCIe SATA controller, dual DVI 1GB PCIe Vid. and had it loaded off of my USB in about 20min. The fastest install I've had yet. Loaded AutoCAD, VMWare, odf converter for openoffice 3, etc... So far so good.

Has anyone loaded the Ubuntu 9.04 Notebook Remix? Is it different? I say it was a 900MB or more file. Anyone tried it yet?

Is there still issues with 64 bit in 9.04 compared to 32 bit?

no issues that i have seen in jaunty. 64bit is the way to go. adding flash, java, codecs, and fonts is now as easy as

sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs
could not get much easier.
