Everything was working fine with ubuntu until last night. I tried to install several programs such as xilinx ise, java etc. and when i reboot my computer all desktop icons were gone! My update manager is also not working. I have lost my term project folder which included executables and c codes. And whenever i try to install something i get the following error with apt-get:

apt-get: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by apt-get)

i can't install anything. What should i do? Reinstall ubuntu? Any attempt on help is highly appreciated.

Note: In addition to all these, on my iconless desktop i right click but nothing seems to happen. I can't use file manager from places --> home because when i click on that nothing happens. I am only allowed to use a terminal where i can't even upgrade/update/install any application.
